This may be a controversial opinion, and you’re welcome to your own opinions, but as people actively participating in capitalism, there comes a point where we have to understand that no matter how much some may demonize accumulating wealth, most external problems are solved after the first couple million dollars. Of course there will always be stressors, but I would personally rather cry in a Maybach than my 2013 Nissan Altima.
As an immigrant from a developing country, I have a different view of life and security than most natural born Americans. It’s a privilege to be born into a position where you can afford to be lazy and know that your children’s right to a future will be somewhat secured. I grind everyday because I want the option to sleep in every morning 10 years from now. I probably wont, but the idea that the actions of my younger self can set up not only my future self, but my descendants, is the most attractive prospect. No matter when you start, you will only thank yourself 10 years down the line.
This genre of money chasing music in popular culture, as of recently has been dominated by Babyface Ray, a rapper that raps in a tone that almost sounds disappointed in you for still being broke. There are more examples, but in my personal “chase a bag” playlist, these 2 are the most played, “My Thoughts 3” & “A Million Cash Race”. These 2 are our songs of the day, your reasoning doesn’t have to be the same, neither does your methodology of chasing that bag, but striving towards security for yourself and loved ones is a natural human desire, and Babyface Ray is telling you to get up and make it happen over new age Detroit style production.
“Count money up when I'm stressed out
Money counter still ain't fast as me (Nah)”
“Hundred racks, I'll fuck it off on nothin'
'Member times I ain't even have a G (Hundred grand ain't shit)”
“I feel late tryna grab these M's
My millionaire niggas tryna grab a B (My nigga, he a billionaire)
How the fuck you broke talkin' 'bout you got opps?
Gotta have guap if you tryna beef”
-Babyface Ray My Thoughts 3
“A million cash race, I was in last place
Get off your ass, Ray, get in your bag, Face
Psh, ayy
How you want some money (Hah), but don't wanna hustle? (Yeah)
And want her to love you? (How?)”
-Babyface Ray A Million Cash Race
